KAHL WOOD FLOORING – FORMALDEHYDE-FREE WOOD FLOORING

Nowadays, consumers are becoming more health-conscious and are starting to shift toward using Formaldehyde-free wood flooring as a safer alternative to conventional flooring materials.

Wood flooring is a highly popular interior material due to its superior aesthetics. However, concerns about health safety from exposure to Formaldehyde emissions in wood flooring have become increasingly significant. So, what exactly is Formaldehyde? How does it affect your health? And where can you buy high-quality, Formaldehyde-free flooring? Let’s explore the answers with KAHL in the article below.

1. What is Formaldehyde Emission?

Formaldehyde—also known as Formol, Methanal, Methyl Aldehyde, etc.—is a colorless gas from the aldehyde group. Under normal conditions, Formaldehyde has a strong, pungent odor. It is widely used in various industries including adhesives, wrinkle-resistant fabrics, preservatives, pesticides, disinfectants, and in the manufacturing of wood flooring.

According to the World Health Organization, Formaldehyde (also referred to as “E”) is classified as a toxic and carcinogenic substance. Due to its high volatility, Formaldehyde can easily be released into the environment, posing serious health risks. While small amounts may not be harmful, emission levels must be strictly controlled during manufacturing to ensure user safety.

2. Why Controlling Emission Standards in Wood Flooring is Crucial

Due to the overuse of Formaldehyde in wood flooring production, emission standards have been established. These standards—agreed upon by the European Union—aim to measure and regulate the amount of Formaldehyde released from wood-based interior products, ensuring they are safe for consumers.

3. Safe Emission Thresholds for Formaldehyde

In Vietnam, the acceptable emission threshold ranges from E2 down to E0. In contrast, the European safety threshold is E1 or below.

Here are the regulated Formaldehyde emission standards:

  • E2: Emission level higher than 0.124 mg/m³ of air (per EN717-1), or 8–30 mg/100g of dry board (per EN120), or less than 5 mg/l of air (per JIS A1460). This level is considered harmful to human health.

  • E1: Emission level below 0.124 mg/m³ of air (EN717-1), less than 8 mg/100g of dry board (EN120), or under 1.5 mg/l of air (JIS A1460). This level is considered safe and poses no health risks.

  • E0: Emission level under 0.3 mg/l of air, representing the safest and most eco-friendly level for human health.

Exceeding Formaldehyde emissions beyond safe thresholds can pose significant health risks to users.

4. What Flooring Types Meet Formaldehyde-Free Standards and Are Safe for Use?

Choosing Formaldehyde-free flooring is essential to protect the health of your family. No one wants to live in an environment that harbors hidden dangers to their well-being day after day. Therefore, consumers should select flooring products with Formaldehyde emissions of E1 or lower to ensure safety.

Today’s market offers many low-cost wood flooring options with appealing features like water resistance and termite protection. However, in order to reduce production costs while meeting these features, many manufacturers use adhesives with high Formaldehyde content. As such, consumers should exercise caution when purchasing inexpensive, unverified products.

Choosing Formaldehyde-free flooring is a vital step in safeguarding your family’s health.
